What are Discover Manufacturing Tours? Discover Manufacturing Tours connect students (grades 6–12) with local manufacturers through facility tours and career exploration experiences designed to expose students to in demand careers.
How long should a tour last and what do they include? Plan for 1–3 hours, including: • Welcome and safety overview • Facility tour or rotations • Career discussion and Q&A Tours lasting less than one hour tend to provide limited value for the educator and student experience.
Why should my students participate? Students gain: • Real world exposure to careers and workplaces • Insight into training, education, and careers • Connection of classroom learning to real careers • Awareness of high demand local jobs
How do educators register and select a tour? When the tour selection timeframe is open, educators select a business and tour dates/times that fit their classroom goals.
What should students wear? • Closed toed shoes are generally required • Follow additional facility-specific requirements
How should I prepare my students before the tour? Key preparation steps: • Review the business website and background • Have students develop and bring questions • Connect classroom curriculum to the tour • Review expectations for behavior
How do I coordinate with the business? Once a tour is selected, a calendar invite containing contact details and tour information is sent to both the business and the educator. Any further details or updates can be communicated between the two parties at that time. Local DMW coordinators and educator champions are available to support registration, planning, and tour coordination.
What are student expectations during the tour? Students are expected to: • Demonstrate professional behavior • Ask thoughtful questions and stay engaged • Follow all safety rules and instructions • Respect business policies (phones, photos, etc.)
How can I keep students engaged during the visit? • Encourage students to ask prepared questions • Connect what they see to the classroom • Promote interaction with employees
