FAQs
What is Discover Manufacturing Week? Discover Manufacturing Week connects students and educators with local manufacturers through facility tours and hands on experiences. The goal is to increase awareness of modern manufacturing careers and career pathways.
How long should a tour last? Plan for 1–3 hours, including: • Welcome and safety overview • Facility tour or rotations • Career discussion and Q&A Tours lasting less than one hour tend to provide limited value for the educator and student experience.
Why should my business participate? Participation helps manufacturers: • Build future talent pipelines • Increase awareness of manufacturing careers • Strengthen relationships with educators • Promote their business and industry
What should we highlight during the tour? Recommended topics include: • Career paths and entry level roles • Training and education requirements • Advancement opportunities • Workplace culture and safety • The variety of jobs beyond the production floor
Who will we host? Most tours host middle school or high school students accompanied by their educator. Some businesses may also host postsecondary students depending on availability.
Who should lead the tour? Tours are most effective when they include: • A leader to share the big picture • Employees who can explain a “day in the life” • A younger employee or apprentice when possible
How do businesses register? Businesses register during the open registration window and provide: • Available tour dates and times • Maximum number of students • A short description of their business Educators later select tours through a self matching system.
What safety preparations are required? Businesses are responsible for: • Providing PPE if it is required • Preparing safe walkways and viewing areas • Clearly marking entrances, exits, and parking • Reviewing safety rules with students
How does the self matching process work? Educators view available businesses and select tours that best fit their classroom needs. Once selected, a calendar invite containing contact details and tour information is sent to both the business and the educator. Contact the educator as soon as possible after selection to confirm details, student age, learning goals, and any special needs. Support staff are available throughout the process to answer questions, assist with planning, and connect employers with additional resources or mentors.
How do we keep students engaged? • Use plain language and avoid jargon • Include hands on demonstrations when possible • Encourage questions and discussion • Show real equipment, products, or processes • Split larger groups into groups of 10 or less
